PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment composition for improving the contrast of a color filter to be used for a color liquid crystal display and a solid-state imaging device. SOLUTION: The pigment composition is obtained by mechanically kneading a mixture containing an organic pigment, a basic dye derivative, a water-soluble inorganic salt, a water-soluble organic solvent that does not substantially dissolve the water-soluble inorganic salt, and a rosin-modified maleic acid resin, and then removing the water-soluble inorganic salt and the water-soluble organic solvent.
