The method involves changing a control from a sleep mode to a wake mode by a plug waking signal that is produced while inserting a charging plug into a charging socket. An external control is communicated with the control and differentiated between the plug waking signal and a waking signal that lies close in a defined voltage range. A continuous level of the waking signal is tested after a waiting period, and parameters of the external control are transferred to a check loop (30). The control is changed to the sleep mode during presence of appropriate parameters or errors. An independent claim is also included for a transportation unit comprising an electrical drive.
