Methods and materials for altering the sterol profile in plants are disclosed. For example, nucleic acids encoding chloroplast targeted 3-hydroxy oxidase polypeptides are disclosed as well as methods for using such nucleic acids to transform plant cells. Also disclosed are transgenic plants producing detectable levels of at least one steroid-3-ketone and/or steroid-4-ene-3-ketone.
