PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control device for safely starting following travel. SOLUTION: A following vehicle 1 stores a travel locus of a preceding vehicle 2, but stores its point when the preceding vehicle 2 separates by a predetermined quantity or more from a straight line path. The following vehicle 1 starts the following travel after confirming that the following vehicle 1, a target point T and the preceding vehicle 2 are put in the safe positional relationship for starting the following travel when receiving a starting request for the following travel. The following vehicle 1 also monitors whether the preceding vehicle 2 contacts or collides with the following vehicle 1 from the positional relationship between the following vehicle 1, the target point T and the preceding vehicle 2 even in the following travel, and stops the following vehicle 1 when there is the possibility of these. In addition, the following vehicle 1 restrains wandering of the preceding vehicle 2 from having influence on following control of the following vehicle 1 by virtually setting a preceding vehicle corresponding position Lp' corresponding to a present position Lp of the preceding vehicle 2 on a straightly advancing path not in an actual present position Lp of the preceding vehicle 2.
