PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator safety device preventing a light beam from being peered. SOLUTION: The elevator safety device includes a photographing means for photographing a doorway; a first foreign substance detection means for detecting a foreign substance based on an image signal obtained from the photographing means; a light projecting means for emitting a light beam crossing the doorway; a light receiving means for detecting the light beam emitted from the light projecting means; a second foreign substance detection means for generating a foreign substance detection signal when the light beam detection by the light receiving means is interrupted; a car door position detection means for detecting whether the width between the end faces of both car doors in a closing direction is a predetermined width not allowing a person to pass therethrough; and a control means. The first foreign substance detection means continues a foreign substance detection operation at least until it is detected that the width between the end faces of both car doors in the closing direction is the predetermined width in the process of closing both car doors. The control means allows the light projecting means to start an emission operation when detected that the width between the end faces of both car doors in the closing direction is the predetermined width.
