PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a proper restart control for an engine according to the rotational speed of the engine when a restart is requested during an engine rotational speed falling period due to the automatic stop of the engine. SOLUTION: When a restart is requested for an engine when an engine rotational speed Ne is in a first rotational speed range (Ne>N1), the engine is restarted by injecting fuel without cranking the engine by a starter. When a restart is requested in a second rotational speed range (N1≥Ne>N2), a pinion is meshed with a ring gear after the rotational speed of the pinion is synchronized with that of the ring gear to start the cranking of the engine by the starter for restarting the engine. When a restart is requested in a third rotational speed range (N2≥Ne>N3), the pinion is rotated after or while the pinion is meshed with the ring gear to start the cranking of the engine by the starter for restarting the engine.
