PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating internal combustion engine avoiding interference of a piston with an intake valve. SOLUTION: Both a variable compression ratio mechanism 11 varying an engine compression ratio and a variable valve train 12 varying the valve lift characteristic of the intake valve 16 are connected to one control shaft 13 by changing the top dead center position of the piston. The variable compression ratio mechanism 11 is connected to the piston 1 through a link row including a compression ratio control link 9 connected to a compression ratio eccentric shaft portion 15 decentered with respect to the rotation center 13A of the control shaft 13. The variable valve train 12 is connected to a swing cam 26 opening/closing the intake valve 16 through a link row including a valve control link 28 connected to a valve eccentric shaft portion 30 decentered with respect to the rotation center 13A of the control shaft 13. The engine compression ratio by the variable compression ratio mechanism 11 and the valve lift characteristic by the variable valve train 12 are continuously changed through the eccentric shaft portions 15, 30 by rotating the control shaft 13.
