<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain construction of a more highly reliable communication network by reducing a probability of full disconnection caused by multiple faults while surely preventing a port to be switched from being erroneously selected. <P>SOLUTION: When detecting fault occurrence on an active transmission line 31, an OAM processing section 14 notifies a protection control section 15 of a protection identifier having a multiple protection configuration in which a fault occurs. The protection control section 15 refers to an entry corresponding to the protection identifier in a protection control table 13 and selects a reserve transmission line and a port, as switch destinations from the state, to perform switching in a communication apparatus. The state of the entry is then updated to a state after switching. In an opposite communication apparatus, switching is also performed according to the same rules as the switching processing.
