PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a glass substrate for a highly flat magnetic disk from flat glass manufactured by a floating method by reducing the size of a grinding allowance. SOLUTION: The glass substrate for the magnetic disk is made of the flat glass produced by a floating method and has a pair of main surfaces. Among the pair of main surfaces, one main surface from which an Sn layer formed when producing the flat glass by the floating method is removed by etching, is set as a surface which is not to be used for magnetic recording, and the other surface is set as a surface which is to be used for magnetic recording.
