PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a single computer run many virtual machines by sharing a virtual memory area in an effective manner, while maintaining independence of virtual memory areas of respective virtual machines. SOLUTION: A virtual machine server includes a plurality of dedicated virtual memory areas as virtual memory areas storing files referenced and updated by each of a plurality of virtual machines; a common virtual memory area as a virtual memory area storing files to be referenced by at least two virtual machines among the plurality of virtual machines; and an input/output substitute means for, if a file requested for reference from an arbitrary virtual machine included in the plurality of virtual machine to a dedicated virtual memory area corresponding to the arbitrary virtual machine is stored in the common virtual memory area, reading the file requested for reference from the common virtual memory area, and outputting the file to the arbitrary virtual machine.
