<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a twist nematic (TN) liquid crystal display device with an inexpensive constitution where inversion, color shift, and blurring of halftone by the viewing angle required for practical performance are solved and the viewing angle of the lateral and vertical directions is large. <P>SOLUTION: The TN liquid crystal display device includes: a TN liquid crystal cell 12; a first polarizing plate 11 having a first protective film 14, a first polarizer 15, and a first retardation film 16 in that order from a visual side; and a second polarizing plate 13 having a second retardation film 20, a second polarizer 21, and a second protective film 22 in that order from a liquid crystal cell side. The first protective film 14, first retardation film 16, second retardation film 20, and second protective film 22 are thermoplastic resin films where spherical fine particles with a volume average particle size of the range of 0.7-10 μm are dispersed.
