PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facial authentication apparatus and a facial authentication method for improving the accuracy of authentication of a face. SOLUTION: The facial authentication apparatus is provided with a facial database storing section 5 for storing a plurality of registered persons image data which is the image data for the facial portion of the registered person, according to the orientation of the registered person's face and the size of the face in the registered persons image data; a facial detection section 1 for detecting the portion of the person's face included in the image data from the acquired image data; a facial feature points extracting section 2 for extracting the feature points of the person's face from the acquired facial image data which is the image data for the portion of the person's face detected; a facial orientation-size estimating section 3 for estimating the orientation of the face and the size of the face for the person in the acquired facial image data; a facial authentication section 4 for authenticating whether the person's facial is the registered person's face from the registered person image data and the acquired facial image data; and an authenticated image updating section 6 for storing the acquired facial image data to the facial database storing section 5 as the registered person image data, when the person's facial is authenticated to be the registered person's face by the facial authentication section 4.
