The system has a torque control module controlling an engine to produce a torque request based on torque that maintains current speed of the engine. An air conditioning (A/C) load comparison module compares a transient load to a difference between the torque available to the engine and the torque request. An A/C load compensation module selectively increases the torque request prior to an A/C clutch engagement based on the comparison, where the clutch engagement includes an air conditioning compressor. An independent claim is also included for a torque compensation method.
