PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use free space of a disk by achieving triple data redundancy as much as possible if necessary. SOLUTION: In the data management device, (1) when a disk node 102-6 fails, (2) a RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) device 103-1 storing duplicate backup data F-3 corresponding to master data F-1 (refer to Fig.12) stored in a RAID device 103-6 of the failed disk node 102-6 is specified. The duplicate backup data F-3 stored in the RAID device 103-1 is treated as duplicate data F-2. When there is a sufficient free space in a RAID device group 103-1 to 103-6 and when all slices of data held by the failed disk node are tripled, data redundancy is not lost immediately after the failure, so that recovery is immediately completed.
