An envelope filling machine for introducing sheets (2) into envelopes (3) includes a sliding surface (5), for transferring the sheets to an envelope filling station (1) by means of pushing lugs (7), operated along the sliding surface (5). An envelope supplying conveyor (16) supplies individual envelopes (3) to the station (1) placing them between vertical shafts (23) of a pair of screws (21). The turns of the screws (21) hold the sides of the envelopes and move each envelope (3) downwards keeping the envelope (3) separated from a subsequent envelope (3). When the envelope (3) has come to rest on a conveyor belt (25) placed between and under the screws (21), the lugs (7) push the sheets (2) into the envelope (3), which is kept steady by movable stop strips (17) yeldingly maintained by elastic means. When the sheets (2) are fully inserted, the lugs push the envelope (3) to force the movable strips (17) to swing and let the filled envelope (33) leave the envelope filling station (1).
