A base station operable to control transmission of encoded data packets, ± method and computer program product are disclosed. The base station is operable to control transmission of encoded data packets and comprises: packet data convergence protocol logic operable to receive data packets and generate encoded data packets; ± radio link controller operable to receive said encoded data packets from said packet data convergence protocol logic for transmission to user equipment, said radio link controller comprising: ± radio link controller buffer operable to store those encoded data packets received from said packet data convergence protocol logic which have yet to be transmitted to said user equipment; and status logic operable to determine ± status of said radio link controller buffer and to transmit an indication of said status in ± status indication packet transmitted to said packet data convergence protocol logic over ± user plane to control transmission of said encoded data packets to said radio link controller. By transmitting the status indication packet over the user plane, control of the transmission of encoded data packets from the packet data convergence protocol logic to the radio link controller can be effected mulch more quickly, thereby significantly reducing the degree of latency between the detection of the status of the radio link controller buffer and any transmission control which needs to occur as ± consequence.
