PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power transmission device for an electric vehicle not using a continuously variable transmission and light in weight, capable of concentrically arranging heavy items in a swing arm at the vehicle body front side, and excellent in the operation of the swing arm. SOLUTION: In the power transmission device for the electric vehicle 1 having a swing arm 12 rotatably journaling a rear wheel WR and an electric motor 50 arranged in the swing arm 12 in a position at the vehicle body front side not overlapping with the rear wheel WR in a vehicle body side view, and transmitting the rotational drive force of the electric motor 50 to the rear wheel WR through a speed reducing mechanism 60 formed of a couple of speed reduction gears, at least a part of the speed reducing mechanism 60 is arranged in a position overlapping with the electric motor 50 in the vehicle body side view, and power transmission from the speed reducing mechanism 60 to the rear wheel WR is performed by an indirect transmission device 90 using a drive chain 66. The electric motor 50 is disposed in the tire width A at the front side of the rear wheel WR. The speed reducing mechanism 60 is disposed in a position at the vehicle body front side of an axle 19 of the rear wheel WR while overlapping with the rear wheel WR in the vehicle body side view.
