PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently generate and accumulate plutonium while restraining excess reactivity, at an early stage of burning and also make the plutonium efficiently burn at a late period of burning by using coolant void fraction control to enable satisfactory reactivity control. SOLUTION: In a boiling water reactor which has fuel support pieces 6 for supporting fuel assemblies 5 and forming control rod guide paths 13 and where an out-channel flow of the coolant is formed that branches off from a main stream of the coolant which is guided into the fuel assemblies 5 and is to be an in-channel flow and is guided into the fuel assemblies, after passing through the control rod guide paths; a control rod 10 includes convex strips 14, laid out at intervals along the insert direction D of the control rod and also protruding toward inner walls 15 of the control rod guide paths of the fuel support pieces 6.
