PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively produce a polyphenylene sulfide resin generating a little amount of a volatile component when melted, and having excellent melt-spinnability at high production efficiency. SOLUTION: The polyphenylene sulfide resin generating≤0.2 wt.% of gas, leaving≤3.0 wt.% of a residue, and having >100 g/10 min and≤500 g/10 min of a melt flow rate, and 100-210°C of a melt crystallization peak temperature is produced by carrying out the following steps in order: (1) reacting a sulfidation agent with a polyhalogenated aromatic compound in an organic polar solvent at a temperature of 200-290°C, and collecting the polymer from the reaction product; (2) washing the resultant polymer with hot water at 80-200°C one or more times; (3) separating the filtrate from the polymer; (4) washing the separated polymer by soaking the polymer in one of an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal, an aqueous solution containing an alkaline earth metal and hot water; and (5) heat-treating the washed polymer.
