PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CaO-based desulfurizing agent which is superior in slag-making property in spite of containing no fluorine, and can desulfurize molten pig iron with a high desulfurization rate, and to provide a method for desulfurizing the molten pig iron by using the same. SOLUTION: The desulfurizing agent for the molten pig iron is formed of a mixture comprising quicklime and an aluminum-based deoxidizing agent including 10 mass% or more of metallic aluminum and the balance substantially alumina, and contains 7 mass% or more of the aluminum-based deoxidizing agent by a blend rate in terms of alumina. The method for desulfurizing the molten pig iron includes adding the desulfurizing agent to the molten pig iron held in a treatment vessel to desulfurize the molten pig iron.
