PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline secondary battery having a negative electrode containing a rare earth-Mg-Ni base hydrogen storage alloy for obtaining high capacity, and enhancing cycle life characteristics and high temperature storage characteristics. SOLUTION: The alkaline secondary battery contains hydrogen storage alloy particles 36 in a negative electrode 26, and the hydrogen storage alloy includes a composition represented by general formula: (A<SB>α</SB>M<SB>1-α</SB>)<SB>1-β</SB>Mg<SB>β</SB>Ni<SB>γ</SB>T<SB>δ</SB>. In the formula, A represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Sm and Gd, M represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of La, Ce, and Nd, T represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of V, Nb, Zn, and Al, and subscripts α, β, γ, and δ each represents a figure satisfying 0.4≤α, 0.05<β<0.22, 0.04≤δ≤1.00, and 2.7≤γ+δ≤3.30.
