PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water closet which performs cleaning by utilizing light such as an ultraviolet ray, and can bring about a sufficient cleaning effect and a sufficient bactericidal effect by enabling the inside of a toilet bowl to be uniformly irradiated with light. SOLUTION: This water closet includes a bowl 1A, a light emitting portion 10 which applies the light to the inner surface of the bowl 1A, and a control unit 7 which controls the lighting of the light emitting portion 10. The control unit 7 elevates the water surface of washing water in the bowl 1A, and makes the light emitting portion 10 emit the light. Thus, the light is reflected on the interface between the bowl 1A and the washing water, subsequently reflected on the water surface of the washing water, and applied to the inner surface of the bowl 1A again; and the whole inner surface of the bowl 1A immersed in the washing water is cleaned and sterilized.
