PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously add images to a plurality of display layers in a display medium having a plurality of display layers which display the images by transmitting and reflecting light according to irradiation with light and application of voltage. SOLUTION: When a photosensitive layer 205R is irradiated with light while pulse signals are applied to conductive layers 202A, 202B, in the display layers 204B, 204G having cholesteric liquid crystal, an alignment state of the liquid crystal changes in an area corresponding to a part irradiated light. When alignment states of the display layers 204B, 204G are separately controlled, a pulse signal of frequency of 100 Hz is applied to the conductive layers 202A, 202b, and a part where the alignment states are changed is irradiated with light. On the other hand, when the alignment states of the display layers 204B, 204G are simultaneously controlled, a pulse signal with frequency of 5 Hz is applied to the conductive layers 202A, 202B, and the part where the alignment states are changed is irradiated with light.
