In the manufacture of viscose artificial sponges from pasty mixtures of concentrated viscose with fibres and soluble and/or fusible pore-forming substances, the fibres, prior to their admixture with the concentrated viscose, are wetted with a dilute solution of viscose having a viscosity of about 10-40 poises. The dilute viscose may contain dyes, wetting agents and fillers. In an example, hemp, which has been cut up to form a fibrous mass, is wetted with dilute viscose containing 2-5 per cent caustic soda, dried, made into a paste with concentrated viscose containing 10 per cent caustic soda and violently mixed with sodium sulphate decahydrate. The paste is moulded and finally coagulated with saturated sodium sulphate. Specification 637,553, [Group XIV], is referred to. |
