PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the risk of step-out resulting from a reduction of a torque margin, and to prevent read image degradation even if intermittent image reading control is performed using a motor having a special stable point such as a two-phase exciting position and the other stable points. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus moves a reading optical system or a read original using a motor having a special stable point which is an exciting position with a large driving torque and the other stable points, and performs intermittent image reading control. The image reading apparatus includes a means for making a stop after moving to the special stable point for correction when a stop position is not the special stable point at a deceleration operation for a temporary reading stop of an intermittent image reading operation and a means for correcting a moving distance to the special stable point for correction at a temporary reading stop operation for a moving distance after intermittent stop restart.
