PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an expandable composition and a method of producing an expanding material for concrete, so as to eliminate complication of preparing a source material or firing quicklime twice in the production of a lime-based expanding material, or to eliminate a problem about inferior energy efficiency, resulting in a high production cost, or a problem about difficulty in expandability of the produced lime-based expanding material because a firing degree easily varies. SOLUTION: The method of producing an expandable composition containing crystalline lime as an effective component comprises: firing lime containing silicon oxide by not less than 2 mass% at a temperature where tricalcium silicate is produced by reaction; and gradually cooling the fired product from the firing temperature.
