PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that a lithium sulfonate (-SO<SB>3</SB>Li) remains in polymers obtained by the conventional method and a method for producing a polymer having a sulfo group (-SO<SB>3</SB>H) by a high conversion ratio is requested. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polymer having the sulfo group (-SO<SB>3</SB>H) comprises the steps of: reacting a polymer having the group represented by formula (1):-SO<SB>3</SB>-R<SP>1</SP>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>represents a 1-20C alkyl group or a 6-20C aryl group each of which may have at least one group selected from the group (a1) consisting of a fluorine atom, a 1-20C alkoxy group, a 6-20C aryl group, a 6-20C aryloxy group, a 2-20C acyl group and a cyano group) with hydrogen halide salt of an amino acid; and reacting the obtained reaction product with an acid.
