PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus for preventing a damaged ink cartridge from being used so that it does not develop to a serious problem such as leakage of ink and an obstacle of a recording head. SOLUTION: A slide member 135 and an optical sensor 126 are provided in a cartridge case 110. A projecting member 76 projecting from a front wall 40 is provided on the ink cartridge 30. In a process in which the ink cartridge 30 is inserted into the cartridge case 110, when the projecting member 76 pushes the slide member 135 to move it to the depth side, this slide member 135 enters in a detecting region 127 of the optical sensor 126. At this time, the output signal of the optical sensor 126 is changed. A control part 90 permits an image recording operation or the like in a printer 10 when the output signal is changed.
