The invention relates to a hob comprising a plurality of heating elements (10), a detector arrangement (12) for detecting the position and/or size of a cooking utensil element (14), and a control unit (16) which is designed to define a heating zone (18) adapted to the cooking utensil element (14) depending on the detected size and/or position of the cooking utensil element (14) and to associate one or more heating elements (10) with the heating zone (18). A user interface (20) comprises a visual display unit (22) and a plurality of control elements (28a - 28f) juxtaposed to the visual display unit (22). The control unit (16) generates a visual display which contains at least one pictogram (24) of a heating zone (18) which pictogram illustrates a position and/or size of the heating zone (18). In order to allow the control elements (28a - 28f) and the heating zones (18) to be clearly associated with each other even when the heating zones (18) are variable, the visual display contains a symbol (26) which is associated with the pictogram (24) of the heating zone (18) and which associates the heating zone (18) with one of the control elements (28a - 28f).
