PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink supply device for achieving both obtaining related information on an ink cartridge and in addition determining the existence of a first projecting part provided for protecting an ink supplying part by a simple constitution. SOLUTION: When the cartridge 30 is inserted into a cartridge case 110, the signal level of an optical sensor 126 during insertion is stored in a RAM 93 (S2). Thereafter, when the cartridge 30 is locked, it is determined whether a changing point of the level exists or not in data of the stored signal level (S4), and when there is no changing point, it is determined as a poor cartridge (S6), and when there exists a changing point, it is determined good one (S5). On the good cartridge, its specification or the like is furthermore determined. This determination is decided by the signal level of the optical sensor 126 at a mounting position.
