The method involves applying a measured value (m) of a measured variable to an alignment value associated with a motor vehicle generator (2) in a processing unit (1a) of a generator regulator (1). The measured value applied to the alignment value is used for determination of a controlled variable. The alignment value is determined as the generator is operated by a value of the controlled variable. The value of the controlled variable is changed until a target variable e.g. generator current (IG) and component temperature, exhibits a desired target value.
