The device has a separating layer (TS) for transporting flat objects (Ps1) in a conveying unit, including a lower conveyor belt (Fb2) arranged perpendicular or vertical to a longitudinal direction (L) of slots (Sp) when the objects are thicker than the slots. The separating layer includes an upper conveyor belt (Fb1), and is formed such that the upper conveyor belt is moved at different velocity. A gravitational force of the object is passed through the separating layer between the upper and lower conveyor belts, and is obtained in the flat objects at the slots. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating flat objects.
