PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing device, an image processing method, an image forming apparatus, computer program and recording medium in which the direction of a document is determined on the basis of image data obtained by scanning the document. SOLUTION: A character recognition unit 221 performs character recognition processing on image data read from a document and segments character data included in the image data character by character. The character recognition unit 221 specifies what character each of the character data represents and determines a top-bottom direction of the specified character. A top-bottom determination unit 222 counts the number of characters determined in each direction in each top-bottom direction. A document classification unit 223 determines the top-bottom direction of each document on the basis of a result of counting by the top-bottom determination unit 222 and outputs a classification control signal indicating the result of the determination. A document shift mechanism 10 classifies documents scanned by a color image input device 1 on the basis of the classification control signal and ejects the document to an eject position different for each classification.
