PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that detects at least one of a document cover and an automatic document feed cover being open at low cost. SOLUTION: A FB cover 60 opens and closes an original placing table 40. An ADF mechanism 80 is provided to the FB cover 60, and automatically feeds a document through a transfer path formed with the ADF cover 100 closed. A through-hole 48 is formed in the document placing table 40. The ADF cover 100 is provided with a rod 102 protruding toward the document placing table 40. A sensor provided to the document placing table 40 detects the rod 102 penetrating the through-hole 48 in a state wherein both the FB cover 60 and ADF cover 100 are closed. In a state wherein at least one of the FB cover 60 and ADF cover 100 is opened, the rod 102 is extracted from the through-hole 48, so the sensor is unable to detect the rod 102.
