[Also in Group XXIII] A method of forming a symmetrical non- circular profile with one or more lobes on rotating work comprises imparting a circular movement to a tool at a speed-ratio with the work according to the desired profile, the plane of the circular movement being inclined with respect to the axis of rotation of the work. A lathe for carrying out the method comprises a spindle 23, Fig. 5, with a work-holder 4 and a sprocket 20 driving, through a chain 21, a further sprocket 22. The latter is driven at a 3: 1 ratio to produce work 5 having three lobes. The sprocket 22 drives, through a flexible-shaft 19, a spindle 12 in a casing 11 secured for rotatable adjustment, to a top-slide 8. The latter is supported, also with rotatable adjustment, on a cross-slide 7 carried by a saddle 6 movable along the bed 1. The casing 11 carries a second spindle 12, and these two spindles are geared together by toothed wheels 14, 15, 14. The spindles 12 carry corresponding crank-pins 41 which move a tool-carrying link 16 in a circular path. The plane of circular-movement is inclined to the work-axis at an angle depending on the shape to be generated. The tool 17 at the end of the link 16 is brought into engagement with the work by adjusting the cross-slide. The saddle is then moved along the work to cut the profile. If tapered profiles are required, the slide 8 is set-over and the handle 10 turned to effect the longitudinal movement. The tool may be replaced by a grinding or milling- cutter. Boring. The lathe may be adapted for boring non-circular holes by using a tool 28, Fig. 8, on an arm and moved in a circular path by a pair of crank-pins 41. A tapered hole may be bored by feeding the slide 8 through the handle 10. |
