When treating a steel blank above Ac1 temperature, particularly a steel blank of greater diameter, to achieve grain refinement and/or to create a microstructure composed of ferritic matrix and spheroidized carbides, the steel blank is gradually heated to a maximum temperature of Aci1, whereupon it is subjected to mechanical forming by plastic strain in order to increase said steel blank temperature above the Aci1 temperature due to the effect of mechanical energy delivered by forming. Subsequently, the steel blank is cooled in a usual manner. |
