PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continue to read an original without imposing inconvenience on a user, even if an LED (Light-Emitting Diode) light source breaks down. SOLUTION: LED circuits 6-8 at the image reader are configured with white LEDs connected in series. Each of the white LEDs is arranged alternately for every LED circuit. Then, when any of the LED circuits 6-8 breaks down, the emission quantity of light at a white LED in an LED circuit which is not out of order is increased to compensate the emission quantity of turned-off light at the broken LED circuit. Otherwise, the original is read without increasing the emission quantity of light at the LED circuit which is not out of order when the reading mode is a normal mode, but it is read increasing the emission quantity of light at the LED circuit which is not out of order when the reading mode is a high gradation mode.
