PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting deposit of toner, accurately measuring deposit of toner regardless of a change in glossiness of a toner carrier; and to provide a color image forming apparatus, performing high-accuracy image density control based on the deposit of toner. SOLUTION: In the case of forming color and black reference images on an intermediate transfer belt 8 and detecting the deposit of toner on the reference images using a toner deposit-measuring device 45 to control the image density, concerning color toner, the deposit of toner is detected using only a measurement output value of S-wave, thereby setting MSΔV so that the deposit is a target value. Concerning black toner, the deposit of toner is detected using a measurement output value of P-S wave, thereby setting MSΔV to be a point of inflection of a graph where the measurement output values are approximated in cubic function.
