PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of the transmission of drive energy by minimizing a friction loss while taking an advantage in terms of cost. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission includes a double pinion planetary gear PG1, a single pinion planetary gear PG2, and a planetary gear PG3. An input shaft IN always connects a ring gear R1 to a sun gear S2, and an output shaft OUT always connects a ring gear R2 to a ring gear R3, respectively, to constitute a rotary member M1, thus always fixing a sun gear S3. A carrier PC1 and a sun gear S3 are always connected to each other to constitute a rotary member M2. A forward eight-speed and back one-speed transmission can be obtained by simultaneously fastening three frictional elements out of six friction elements constituted of: a first clutch C1 for connecting a sun gear S1 and a carrier PC3; a first brake B1 for locking the sun gear S1; a second clutch C2 for connecting the sun gear S2 and the carrier PC3; a third clutch C3 for connecting a carrier PC2 and the rotary member M2; a fourth clutch C4 for connecting the carrier PC2 and the carrier PC3; and a second brake B2 for locking the rotary member M1.
