PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for opening and closing a transfer/printing mechanism of a printer and a method of opening and closing the transfer/printing mechanism, preventing a paper jam even in the case of reverse transfer in the printer where a greater speed ratio is set for the head drive portion side along the direction of transfer. SOLUTION: In view of the fact that the jamming of printing paper 3 is avoided by opening a transfer mechanism 6 or a printing mechanism 7 by means of respective cam mechanisms 19, 20 during backfeed, the transfer mechanism 6 has a pair of transfer rollers 13, 14, and the printing mechanism 7 has rotatable platen rollers 15, 16, and thermal heads 17, 18 that move toward and away from the respective platen rollers 15, 16 via the printing paper 3. The first cam mechanism 19 opening and closing one 14 of the transfer rollers with respect to the other 13 of the transfer rollers, and the second cam mechanism 20 opening and closing the thermal heads 17, 18 with respect to the platen rollers 15, 16, are provided.
