PURPOSE: A method for determining priority of directory scans in a cache is provided to prioritize certain scans in a cache so that one particular scan type does not potentially become backlogged behind another scan type. CONSTITUTION: A storage controller(14a) includes two identical clusters(61a,71a) of CPUs(68a,78a), caches(66a,76a), NVS(69a,79a), and any number of pairs of device adapters. There is a shared cache memory for each cluster, respectively. The caches contain a directory of data files stored on each cache, respectively. The directory includes any number of directory entries associated with each of the data files. Each cluster also contains battery backed-up storage.
