<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer sheet which has high transfer sensitivity of dye and transfer efficiency at the time of thermal transfer, and ensures the availability of high-density printed matter to full satisfaction. <P>SOLUTION: This thermal transfer sheet has a dye layer formed on one of the surfaces of a base material sheet, and a heat-resistant lubricity layer formed on the other surface. In this thermal transfer sheet, the dye layer contains at least a dye, a binder resin and a thermal migration additive, and the dye melts into the thermal migration additive at a higher temperature than the melting point of the additive. In addition, the thermal migration additive is preferably at least one kind selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, an aliphatic carboxylic ester, an aliphatic carboxylic amide, an aromatic carboxylate, a higher alcohol, a thiocarboxylate, a phosphoric ester and a polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether.
