Secure data transfer apparatus comprising a first device 200 to be mounted in a housing 400 and having a predetermined normal configuration for normal operation wherein secure data transfer takes place between the first device 200 and a second device 300 in the housing 400. The first device 200 includes a detector configured to detect when the first device 200 is placed in a predetermined initialization configuration different from the normal configuration and to enable an initialization data transfer between the devices for permitting normal operation to occur thereafter in said normal configuration. The first device 200 may be a peripheral device or component of a vending of gaming machine. The first device 200 may be placed within or on a docking station or shelf 520 or fixed to a bracket within the machine. The second device 300 may be a processing unit of the machine. The initialization data may comprise an encryption key sent from the first device 200 to the second device 300 which is used to secure all messages sent between the devices. This may only be sent in the initialization configuration, which is preferably a geometric orientation, angular position or acceleration different from that achievable when the first device 200 is installed within the housing 400. This means that the encryption key cannot be transmitted when the device is fixed in the housing 400.
