PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and an operating method thereof are provided to realize local dimming through an edge type backlight unit, thereby improving a contrast feature of the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION: Waveguide channels of the first and second directions are formed in a light guide plate part. A backlight unit partitions a surface light source into blocks of a matrix type. A dimming control unit(16) analyzes an input image by a block size unit. The control unit controls dimming values to reduce brightness differences among adjacent blocks by the dimming values.
