The cane (51) has an S-shaped intermediate element (54) extended through an upper element (53) and a telescopic lower end. The lower element has an end segment and a main segment (522) stacked with respect to each other. The main segment slides in a lower end (55) of the intermediate element. The lower end is associated to a blocking unit, and arranged such that the upper and lower elements have parallel axes. The blocking unit adopts an unblocking state to allow sliding of the main segment in the lower end, and a blocking state to prevent sliding of the main segment in the lower end. An independent claim is also included for a metal detector comprising an operating cane.
