PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve start responsiveness by shortening clutch engagement time when returning from a neutral control. SOLUTION: When decelerating and stopping, a speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission is changed to a speed ratio at a high side (smaller side) from a maximum speed ratioγmax before stopping. By this transmission control on decelerating and stopping, it is possible to shorten the clutch engagement time when returning from the neutral control and to improve the start responsiveness. When returning from the neutral control, the start responsiveness is secured by quickly shifting (downshifting) the speed ratio of the continuously variable transmission to the maximum speed ratioγmax when clutch engagement is completed.
