The method involves operating a combustion engine such that multiple exhaust valves (12a-12f) are opened in a predetermined time period. A part of another multiple exhaust valves (14a-14f) of multiple selected cylinders (10a-10f) is closed, where one of the exhaust valves (14a) is opened in the time period. The selected cylinder is loaded with fuel and air according to desired value, and an exhaust gas delivery of the selected cylinder and desired value are determined and compared respectively depending on a measuring result of a lambda sensor (28). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a combustion engine as a part of a device.
