PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface processing method of a glass material, by which a processing time can be reduced to improve productivity as well as the finish surface can be made more smooth. SOLUTION: The surface processing method of a glass material includes, upon forming a silica glass formed article 2 by grinding, a surface processing step of fusing the surface of the silica glass formed article 2 by irradiating the article with a laser beam 21 having a linear width and a predetermined acute inclination angleθwith respect to the surface of the glass formed article 2.
