The device has a detector arranged in an area of a floor in response to foot movement of a person directed out from the floor and into the floor. The detector is photo-optical and works with invisible light. The detector has a light curtain formed from light beams (8, 9), where the light beams are emitted from a central source. The detector has light receivers (11, 12) in response to interruption of the light beams. The detector is activated when a door is opened, and the light receivers are attached in an area of a B-column (10) and an A-column (5). An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting entry and exit movements of vehicle users.
