The warning system has an infrared camera (1) for generating thermographic image data for an area, a computer for evaluating the thermographic image data and a transmission unit (5) for transmitting an emergency signal depending on an output signal of the computer. The thermographic image data is assigned to multiple image points of a temperature value. The computer is equipped by software. The area to be monitored leaves out a sub region of a visual field masked by the infrared camera. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting an emergency situation.
